The use of more mobile technology has helped interface a wider range of people into the stream of electronic human connectivity. Also, an increase of marketing tactics and enticing hooks have emerged which have bumped the scales and driven more people to look into the chat rooms culture.
A deeper issue might also be to blame here. It can be noted that our societies are becoming more and more isolated and individual. Privacy is the bedrock of people's lives, but a constant anchor exists and proves itself as an internal human pull towards human interactivity. Chat rooms provide a way to fulfil the need to connect in some way; as isolation is actually destructive for people. People can therefore attain a level of interaction in chat rooms but keep it purely on their own terms.
Chat rooms also help people be something and someone they are not. This may reflect on a cultural breakdown of personal identity and human value. These issues could well be the deepest core of the topic, but unfortunately many people can remain blind to them. The surface reasons above are an easy answer.
